Q. Are The Fees For Psychological Services Covered By MSI?

A. Private counselling and assessment services are not covered by MSI, however many personal health insurance plans (e.g., Blue Cross, Sun Life, Great West Life, Manulife) do cover either the full or a percentage of the cost of services of a Registered Psychologist and a Registered Clinical Social Worker. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) of businesses as well as some government agencies (e.g., Veterans Affairs, RCMP, First Nation and Inuit Health, Workers Compensation, etc.) may also cover the costs of such services. We would be happy to assist you in determining whether coverage exists.

Psychological services can also be income-tax deductable as a health-care expense. Receipts are issued for all services rendered.

Q. What Are The Fees for Psychological Services at Jacqueline Milner-Clerk & Associates?

A. Beginning October 1, 2019, Based on our provincial psychology board recommendations (APNS.CA), our fee for individual counselling services provided by our psychologists is $190 per 50-minute session (+10-minute administration time). This fee is also applied to any external meetings, letters and/or reports that are requested on your behalf. Our fee for a 50-minute couple's or family counselling session is $195. Fees are required at the commencement of each session.

Our fee for individual counselling services provided by our clinical social workers is $170 per 50-minute session (+10-minute administration time). This fee is also applied to any external meetings, letters and/or reports that are requested on your behalf. Our fee for a 50-minute couple's or family counselling session is $180. Fees are required at the commencement of each service. 

Our fee for psychological assessment is determined by the type of assessment that is requested and/or required and typically ranges in the cost of $960 (for screening) to $2998 (full comprehensive psycho-educational assessment). Assessment typically includes initial interview, document review, discussions and/or meetings with other relevant professionals, testing, scoring, interpretation, report preparation and client review. The type, process and cost of psychological assessment will be determined and agreed between the client and practitioner before actual testing/assessment begins. The results and accompanying report of an assessment will not be released until full payment is received. 

We will directly bill insurance companies, EAP’s and third-party agencies where possible. In other cases, we accept cash, debit, e-transfers, VISA or Master Card. Personal cheques are not accepted.

Q. What If I Miss An Appointment?

A. 24 hours notice (or by 12 noon Friday for Monday appointments) is required to change or cancel an appointment so we can fill the appointment with someone else on our waiting list and utilize our time effectively. If the required notice is not given then there is a charge (100% of the fee for time booked) for the missed time.

Please note that most insurance companies and EAP’s do not accept receipts for missed appointments so please give sufficient notice to avoid unnecessary cost to you.

(Charge for missed appointments may be waived in circumstances where there is a snow storm and it is dangerous to drive, natural weather disasters that create a state of emergency or power outage in the city, personal serious illness and death in the family. A call is required in any event).

Q. What Should I Expect At The First Visit?

A. During the first meeting with your counsellor you will verbally go over the paper work and address any relevant issues and questions that may arise regarding services and credentials. Information regarding the purpose of seeking psychological services will be gathered to formulate a possible diagnosis of the presenting problem and together with your counsellor you will formulate a treatment plan and goals. In some circumstances more than one session is required for this initial process.

A parent or guardian of youth 18 years or younger are required to attend the first meeting at its commencement to fill out the required paperwork and speak to the relevant counsellor.

We ask that you please arrive at your first appointment 15 minutes early to fill out the necessary paperwork.  Failure to do so may result in the time allotted for your appointment to be used for this time.  Should you choose, you can download and complete the required paper work HERE and bring it with you on your first visit.

Q. What If I Don’t “Click” With My Counsellor?

A. Although every effort is made to try to match clients to the “best-fit” counsellor, in some circumstances the arrangement does not feel right, after all there are many different approaches and personalities. We understand the importance of a good therapeutic relationship and are open to addressing your concerns and will work with you to facilitate referral to another counsellor if needed.

Q. What Is The Difference Between A Psychologist and Psychiatrist?

A. A Psychologist has post-graduate university training, either at the Master or Doctoral level, and is registered with a provincial psychology licensing board. Psychologists are trained in the area of human thought, behaviour and emotions and this learning is further developed for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of mental health and lifestyle problems. Psychiatrists attend medical school and first become a physician. They then specialize in the area of psychiatry which is the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and emotional disorders. Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medication for mental health disorders.
